For all their lack of identifiable subject matter, Farouk Hosny’s paintings are open to being understood by the viewer as an “ongoing abstract interpretation” of visual phenomena in the real world. Farouk Hosny is an artist who remains truly contemporary, who describes modernity not as emphasis but instead by projecting images that denote the entire unresolved complexity.

Farouk Hosny is an artist who feels the desire to be free from the narrow frame imposed by reality; leaving his inspiration leads him to much more freedom.

“Farouk Hosny’s paintings fall within the realm of lyrical abstraction. His marvellous blue and white overlie a thread of violent red or green that subverts and dramatically and dynamically fires form within the idyllic warp and woof, which are merely the point of departure”. Enzo Bilardello

“Farouk Hosny’s abstract art points strongly to the realisation that absolute forms do exist (with or without structure), that these forms radiate their own constant source of light, and that they mysteriously and spontaneously appear from the darkness” – Joan Nickles

About the Artist

Farouk Hosny was born in the great Mediterranean city of Alexandria. Hosny pursued his studies in Alexandria, where he graduated from the Alexandria Academy of Arts in 1964. Upon graduation, Hosny was appointed as director of Anfoushy Cultural Palace in Alexandria and later moved to Paris as Cultural Attaché in charge of the Egyptian Cultural Center in Paris. Hosny was honored at an early age to assume the prestigious position of handling the Egyptian Academy of Arts in Rome. Upon his great success at the Rome Academy, he was chosen as the Minister of Culture of Egypt, a position he held until his retirement in 2011. Hosny is well-known for his unique abstract style in art.

His artworks were exhibited in the most important international museums, exhibitions, and art centers. In his travels, he was introduced by the most important art critics; the likes of Jessica Winegar, Dan Cameron, Philippe de Montebello, Michel Nuridsany, France, Enzo Bilardello, Giovanni Carladente, Lorenza Troki, and Maria Trenga Benedetti. His works have been exhibited in several international museums, including the Metropolitan Museum, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Fort Lauderdale in Miami, the National Museum of Vienna, Le Vittoriano Museum in Rome, Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, and the Tokyo Art Museum. In addition to several Arab and Egyptian museums, Hosny’s paintings speak the language of the modern world, with exquisite balance, enigmatic imagery, and a dynamic palette. Through his use of abstraction, Hosny has transformed the eternal signs of his native country into restless, calligraphic gestures using vivid colors evocative of the Egyptian landscape: the blacks of sudden nightfall, the blues of seawater, the whites of limestone, the violets of the Sinai mountain range, the burning ochres of the desert, the green of the flowing Nile, the grays of ancient stones, and the oranges of flaming sunsets.
