Mohamed Abla

Painter

Mohamed Abla, a multimedia artist, utilizes various mediums like paintings, sculptures, engravings, and installations to portray folklores and landscapes from the MENSA region. He also addresses contemporary social and political topics through intricate layers. Abla challenges disciplinary boundaries by integrating different techniques, such as incorporating lithography and collages into paintings, as part of his joyful artistic experiments.

Following his graduation from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Alexandria in 1973, Abla embarked on a seven-year journey across Europe, visiting museums in Spain, France, Belgium, and Germany. He eventually studied art, sculpture, and graphics in Vienna and Zurich. His first solo exhibition took place at the Hohmann Gallery in Hamburg, Germany in 1979, followed by shows at Gallery Ewat in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands in 1989; Art Hall in Örebro, Sweden in 1991; and the Egyptian Academy of Rome, Italy in 1991, among others. In 1994, he achieved the First Prize at the Kuwait Biennial, followed by the Grand Prix at the Alexandria Biennale in Egypt in 1997. Abla has also participated in numerous international art events such as the Havana Biennial in Cuba, and his work has been featured in several group exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum in Bonn, Germany.
