Effat Nagy was born in 1905 in Alexandria, Egypt, he was born into a deep-rooted aristocratic family, Effat Nagy received private art tutoring at the age of 15, progressing with artistic development by reproducing her older brother Mohamed Nagy’s exemplar paintings. Nagy continued her studies in Rome-based Accademia di Belle Arti with a focus on decorative arts during the 1940s.
Effat’s inspirations stemmed from folkloric arts & Egyptian archaeological heritage. She was fluent in employing manifold mixed media approaches resulting in vividly-coloured & heavily-textured productions. She was also among the group of artists who were commissioned by the government to depict the Nubians’ relocation following the building of the high dam. The commission’s byproduct “The High Dam” is currently resting at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Nagy’s work has been repeatedly auctioned and held at esteemed collections namely Barjeel Art Foundation, Christie’s, and Picasso Art Gallery. Effat Nagy passed away on 4th of October, 1994.
