Farghali Abdel-Hafiz, one of Egypt’s most renowned artists, has built a career that spans over six decades and has taken him to several continents.
He was born in 1941 and completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Art in Florence. He proudly represented Egypt at various biennials, such as Sao Paolo in 1985, Venice in 1972, 1987, and 1993, as well as China in 2002. In 1996, he served as the General Curator of the Cairo Biennial. In 1981, he played a pivotal role as a founding member of the Axis Group, which emerged as one of the most influential art movements in Egypt during the postmodern era. He has held more than 20 international exhibitions across Europe and the United States
Abdel-Hafiz utilizes traditional mediums to depict innovative, ethereal visuals by employing a combination of oils and acrylics on canvas. His paintings seem to prioritize the narrative over the setting. Hailing from Dariout in Middle Egypt, Abdel-Hafiz also incorporates folklore and incorporates materials sourced directly from his environment such as straw, sand, mud, and clay.
As a modern Egyptian artist, his pieces have been showcased in various exhibitions at prominent galleries and museums
