Painter

Guirguis Lotfy was born in 1955 and currently resides and works in Alexandria, Egypt. He began studying at the Alexandria Faculty of Fine Arts in 1980 and graduated with a master’s in Coptic Painting (4th-8th century).

The Cairo Faculty of Fine Arts handed him a Ph.D. in Coptic Art and its Impact on Modern Art in 1994. Lotfy portrays Egyptian feasts, festivities, and rituals that were and still are woven into the fabric of the culture. He gives a personal depiction of the bonding and shared history, inspired by Pharaonic, Islamic, or Coptic traditions. He depicts everyday scenes with ordinary people.

Lotfy utilizes gold leaf, bee wax, or tempera colors dissolved in egg yolk to reproduce the two-thousand-year-old Egyptian painting technique of religious iconography and the legendary Fayoum portraits.
