Hassan Mohamed Hassan

Painter

Hassan Mohamed Hassan el-Feky (1906–1990), also known as Hassan Mohamed Hassan, was a prominent figure in the second wave of Egyptian modern art, alongside artists like Saeed elSadr (1909–1986) and Ahmed Osman. Critics have dubbed him the “Painter of the Epics and Philosophies,” and his colleagues have acknowledged his strong commitment to classical forms in Egyptian modern art. He created over 100 paintings, some of which are large-scale, and most of his works are currently preserved by his family in his former residence near the Pyramids in Cairo. Additionally, he authored four books on various subjects, including arts, art history, philosophy of art, and arts and society.

Hassan was born in Cairo in 1906 to a middle-class family, and his father was a Sufi Sheikh. He witnessed the early stages of Egypt’s partial independence from the Ottomans during British occupation. Reflecting the trends of his time in Cairo, he was known for his patriotic sentiments and sought to establish a modern national identity that integrated both heritage and modernity. He passed away in Cairo on 30th March 1990, leaving behind three daughters and a son. His son, Mohamed Hassan El-Feky, followed in his footsteps and also made a significant contribution to Egyptian contemporary art.
